Know What’s Possible.
Then Aim for It.
Industry KPI benchmarking compares your business against what organisations of similar size and type actually achieve. It tells you whether you are performing at, above or below industry norms — and what is genuinely achievable if you apply the right improvement methodology.
You Cannot Manage What You Do Not Measure
We have an array of benchmarks and KPIs we use to assess how effective the systems and processes of an organisation are. Applied consistently, they give us an objective picture of performance regardless of business type or industry.
Once we understand where you are, we set targets to aim for and work towards achieving them. The targets are not arbitrary — they are based on what we know is achievable from experience with similar organisations, and what the principles of Manufacturing Systems Engineering tell us is possible.
In some cases, where benchmarks are substantially below industry norms, we may assess whether an engagement is likely to deliver sufficient return to justify the investment — and advise you honestly.
The KPIs We Use to Assess Performance
These are examples of the benchmarks we apply. The specific set used in any engagement is tailored to your industry and business type. Note: figures below are based on businesses of fewer than 25 employees running a single shift in South East Queensland. Factors such as level of automation and geographic location will affect results.
Revenue per person per year
The single most powerful indicator of operational efficiency. Industry typical for manufacturing: $220k–$240k. Our clients typically achieve $480k. Warehouse and logistics operations have the potential to reach 2.5×–3× this figure.
Revenue per square metre per month
How effectively your physical space is being used. Typical range: $300–$400 per m² per month. Our clients typically achieve $600 or more, with a best result of $950.
Throughput rate
Output per hour or per shift, compared to what Methods, Time and Motion analysis tells us is achievable. Often reveals significant hidden capacity.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
The product of Availability, Performance and Quality for key equipment. World class is 85%. Many organisations run at 40–60% without knowing it.
Lead time
Total time from order receipt to delivery. Often contains significant non-value-adding time that can be eliminated without additional resources.
Cost of quality
The total cost of prevention, appraisal, internal failure and external failure. Typically 5–30% of revenue in organisations without a quality management system.
WHS performance
TRIFR, LTIFR, near-miss reporting rates and corrective action close-out times. Benchmarked against AS 1885.1-1990 and industry norms.
Training & competence coverage
Percentage of personnel with current, verified competence records for their role requirements. An ISO requirement and a key risk indicator.
Audit compliance rate
Percentage of audit actions closed out on time. A leading indicator of management system health and organisational discipline.
What Our Clients Have Achieved
These are real results from real engagements. Every business is different — these figures illustrate what is possible when the right improvements are made in the right order.

Car dealer service department. 50% throughput improvement generating approximately $480,000 per year in additional margin.
Productivity
Laminations company. 300% improvement in throughput using the same process, personnel and equipment.
Days lead time
Aerospace jet engine service. Lead time reduced from 60+ days to around 21 days including client authorisation of MROH activities.
From Measurement to Improvement Plan
KPI benchmarking is not just about knowing your numbers. It is about knowing what to do with them.
Baseline measurement
We establish your current KPI values using structured data collection methods. Where data does not exist, we help you create the systems to capture it.
Benchmark comparison
Your KPIs are compared against industry best practice and our database of prior engagement outcomes to identify where the greatest opportunities lie.
Target setting
Realistic targets are set based on what we know is achievable for a business of your type, size and operating conditions.
Improvement plan
A prioritised improvement plan that identifies the specific actions needed to move your KPIs from current state to target — in the right sequence.
Ongoing tracking
We can establish reporting systems to track KPI progress over time, ensuring improvements are sustained and new opportunities identified.
ISO alignment
All KPI frameworks are designed to support performance evaluation requirements under ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001.
Find Out How Your Business Compares
